Rachel & Sean, Part 1 – New York Wedding Photographer

I drove up to New York the night before Rachel and Sean’s July wedding. I’m a bit of a nervous Nancy, and so the thought of getting stuck in traffic on the day of their wedding gave me a stomachache. Luckily I had a place to stay for the weekend, as one of my best college girlfriends lives on City Island right down the street from the wedding venue.

After a few more hours in the car than I anticipated (due to an overturned dump truck on 95), Tim, my second shooter and dear dear friend, and I grabbed a bite to eat. While we were eating, we were discussing the wedding – church, reception, shot list, etc – and Tim asked me what Rachel and Sean were like. What sort of interests did they have? What did they do for a living? All the sorts of getting-to-know-you questions that people usually ask.

Of course, my memory failed me as it always seems to do. I’m the girl that reads a book and immediately forgets the story once I put it down. I remember small details, but completely lose the plot.

“You’ll really like them”, I said. ” They remind me of people that we would be friends with.” Not exactly what Tim was looking for, but entirely true nonetheless.

Rachel and Sean felt like instant friends when I first met them at a corner cafe in New York. Our conversation came so easily, none of those awkward pauses that sometimes come with people you’ve never met. And then later – through the engagement session and during all of our phone consultations – we just clicked. Rachel and Sean are my kind of people – laid back, easygoing, hilarious, and full of love. For their friends, for their families, and for each other.

In the end, while not very descriptive, I’d have to say that my summary of Rachel and Sean was right on the money. At the end of the night Tim told me he knew exactly what I meant. “That was one of the most heatfelt weddings I’ve ever been to”, he said. ” It felt like all 200+ people were truly and genuinely celebrating these two. I felt like I was a part of their wedding, rather than just the guy documenting it. And by the end of the night, I really was celebrating with them.” Like a friend.
